Lofi Ceramics - Emma Lakey

Raised in the Edmonton clay community, Emma had been potting since the age of 7, growing along side her craft for over 18 years. Emma’s start at Viva Clayworks as a student progressed into apprenticeship, instruction and technical work. These days she can be found not only teaching Viva Clayworks but also acting as a manager, instructor and studio technician at Studio72 in addition to running Lofi Ceramics.

Lofi Ceramics was brought to fruition in 2019 after Emma finished university and found a rhythm working in and experimenting with ceramic arts.

Her clean, gentle forms often serve as a canvas for illustration and playful surface decoration using underglaze, UG pencil and sgraffito. The “boob mug” is a Lofi Ceramics staple which started as a fundraiser project, raising money for BLM in 2020. These boob mugs quickly found their way into the homes and hearts of many, and have been a regular item stocked in local shops and markets. Similarly, Emma’s egg dishes and egg spoon rests are a constant in her rotation, bringing fried egg wares to every market and shop update! As of late, Emma has been leaning into her love of ancient ceramics, drawing from her classics minor, to create traditional amphorae with contemporary surface decoration.
